67: Auction Fever


Saturdays Oswestry & District Poultry Auction would appear to have been a resounding success. With almost 300 lots and nearly 1000 birds on sale, the auction room was packed. Prices were good with highlights of 4 Poland pullets pulling £105 and 3 Wyandottes reaching the £90 mark. We are now working with Roger Parry & Partners to make this into a regular event with the next Auction booked already for April 22nd 2012, so watch this space!

This weekend sees the 5th Oswestry Food & Drink Festival and we'll be there for our 2nd year on the Green Wing. We'll be there with plants on the Saturday and with both plants and chickens on the Sunday so do pop along and say hello

It is with huge excitement that we'd like to announce that the first ever Oswestry Pure Breed Poultry auction will be going ahead on Sat 27th August. The auction is being organised by ourselves in conjunction with Roger Parry & Partners. Running along side the auction will be a farm machinery sale and the day promises to be a good one. Come along to RSPB Conwy on Sunday for their Gardeners Market & Specialist plant sale. There’ll be a wide variety of plants for sale, grown by local nurseries who will also be happy to give advice and information about suitable plants for your garden. Specialist advisers will be on hand to answer your questions, and there will be expert advice on compost making, bee-friendly gardening and poultry keeping

58: Robins hatched


For those who contacted us & those following us on Twitter, the robins have hatched 4 young in the polytunnel nest and 3 in the insect hotel nest. Its all 'hatching eggs' hatching here it seems some days!

57: Robins Nest


A robin has taken up residence in a stack of recycled pots in the polytunnel despite all the human activity it seems quite settled. Meanwhile another has dismantled a part of the insect hotel for a nest site - it must be like living in a larder!

41: Chicken Tip


Don't forget, poultry need water, check drinkers frequently during the cold snap to make sure they are free from ice. Emptying them at night and refilling in the morning is easier than trying to defrost

40: Autumn Tip


If you are getting muddy chicken runs in the autumn weather then fill the run with fallen leaves for a few weeks. Rake them up and leave to rot for an excellent compost/soil conditioner for the flower beds in the spring. Plants & Poultry can work together ;-)

Goliath the Gold Brahma cock took 1st Place in his class at the Oswestry & District Poultry show this weekend, with a Lemon Pyle Brahma pullet and Red Pyle Brahma pullet taking 2nd and 3rd respectively to complete the 1,2,3.

19: Warmer Weather


With the recent warm weather the garden is now waking up, albeit 2 weeks behind. The swallows have returned and the poultry are all more or less in full lay. If you are more into eating eggs than hatching eggs then drop by and pick some up. We have chicken and duck eggs available for £1.20/half dozen, and some turkey eggs which can help make the most moist of sponge cakes so one regular customer tells me.

The brunnera and pulmonaria are in flower now. These are lovely plants for a shady border. We have a number of varieties and colours available now.

17: Hatching Eggs


If you can't collect your hatching eggs in person then don't worry, we can send them through the post. They are packaged in special polystyrene boxes for maximum protection, and sent next day delivery by 1pm. P&P prices are £6.50 for 6 eggs, £8.50 for 12 eggs. Happy Hatching!

14: Lucky Lurch


Lurch is our bronze turkey, he survived Christmas due to being such a friendly chap. You may have seen him in Feb 2010 edition of Pracitcal Poultry. He now has a fine pair of hens to keep him company and we are looking forward to our first turkey eggs and hopefully hatching some - a new venture for us.

8: More Snow


Yet more snow has fallen in what is possibly the hardest winter since we moved here. Whilst the growth of the plants is slowed in these conditions, the additional light reflected off the white snow means many of the birds are now in full lay - lets hope this is a sign of spring around the corner

7: And they're off!


The glasshouses have had their spring clean and seed sowing has started. Many of the breeds are now laying more frequently with fertility proving to be high. The young Gold Laced Orpington bantams, La Fleche, Sussex and Brahmas hatch a few weeks back are growing rapidly despite the testing weather conditions

4: First Hatch & First Bulbs


Fertility testing followed through to a successful hatch of Light Sussex, Brahma, La Fleche and Gold Laced Orpington Bantams. Ancona eggs will be re-tested in the next two weeks along with Araucana. A mixed batch of bantam eggs will be next to be tested. The first spring bulbs of the year are starting to put in an appearance in the nursery tunnel and the first primulas are in flower with the Gold Laced putting on a good show
